Site Clean-up
Like most major industrial corporations, Pfizer investigates and restores sites where we have cleanup obligations under federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Pfizer has operated research and manufacturing facilities for more than 160 years. At many older facilities, waste management requirements and good environmental practices originally were very different from what they are today. As a result of the company's long history and acquisitions, Pfizer is involved in cleanups associated with past activities. The company conducts site investigations and remediation in cooperation with government agencies and other parties to address issues that Pfizer has taken responsibility for. We commit resources to protect health and the environment.
The vast majority of remediation liability involves entities we acquired — not impacts we caused.
Soil and groundwater contamination at industrial sites can pose risks to the environment, as well as to the health and safety of workers and neighbors in surrounding communities. Pfizer works to prevent contamination by reducing waste and through robust due diligence for evaluating potential liabilities. When contamination is found, we mitigate any immediate risk, assess the potential impact and take remediation steps.
Pfizer also considers the future of these properties, often looking for opportunities to restore land and preserve natural resources.
Environmental Concerns in Business Transactions
EHS professionals provide support on significant transactions. This team applies a due diligence and transaction review process for acquiring and divesting businesses and properties. This safeguard ensures that potential environmental, health and safety risks are considered during contract negotiations and that adequate measures address identified issues. In addition, the team helps business units develop remedial action plans, if needed, and integration plans to align newly acquired sites with Pfizer's EHS practices.
Restoring Natural Resources
Pfizer is a potentially responsible party at several multi-party Superfund sites in the United States. Most are disposal sites never owned or operated by the company. They are sites affected by waste management practices that were standard in the past or where our wastes were improperly handled by disposal contractors. At the majority of sites, Pfizer is one of numerous parties and has a very small share of responsibility.
At former operating facilities such as the one in North Haven, Connecticut Pfizer goes beyond remediation to focus on community outreach and ecosystem restoration.
Former manufacturing sites with environmental contamination can present significant challenges to companies and communities because of the need to cleanup the site and encourage productive future use. The Environmental Engineering, Remediation & Transactions (ERT) team of Pfizer Global Engineering is responsible for managing environmental remediation at the company's inactive sites and for supporting efforts to return idle sites to productive uses that benefit those communities...
