Green Buildings

Pfizer Green Buildings
Every company office building, manufacturing site, logistics center and R&D facility has an impact on the environment. The Green Buildings Program aligns with Pfizer's mission of "working together for a healthier world." Green Buildings deliver benefits to occupants, the company and communities where the company does business. The net result is simple and clear: Going green delivers business value through lower facility lifecycle costs and helps minimize our company's environmental footprint — a win-win for Pfizer and for the environment.

What is "Green Building"?

Pfizer owns or leases approximately 58 million gross square feet of building space. A substantial amount is renovated, added to and/or transferred every year. We recognize the value of careful land use planning and protecting natural resources, and strive to increase our buildings' performance environmentally and from an energy perspective. Our Green Buildings Program is an important component of our environmental stewardship and engineering excellence.

"Green Buildings" are designed and constructed to conserve energy and natural resources and help occupants engage in "green" behaviors. Building designs using green principles provide environmental and health benefits to occupants, while reducing use of natural resources.

The Pfizer Green Buildings Program systematically considers these factors:

  • Water conservation
  • Waste management
  • Renewable energy sources
  • Nontoxic materials
  • Recycled/reused materials
  • Energy efficiency
  • Reduced environmental impact on the building site
  • Wise use of space/reduced building size
  • Balance risk vs. life cycle energy use when specifying "spare" capacity of equipment
  • Balance of environmental and economic impacts

Freiburg, Germany: Green Challenge Revival of a 1950's Building

Pfizer FreiburgProject SPRING (Strategic Plant RestructurING), PGM Freiburg challenged a team of engineers and architects to not only improve the 50+-year-old building's sustainability, but also improve its operating cost and performance. A project team at the Freiburg site transformed the 1950s-era facility into a modern, eco-friendly building using innovative and cost-effective "green" building technologies and techniques, such as a ventilation process that reduces air flow rates and a geothermal system that uses the natural heat storage capacity of the earth's thermal mass to provide energy-efficient heating and cooling...
